The Human Equation
Yet another reason the Y2K bug is not a big deal is that we, as a society, have developed certain psychological tendancies that make us believe in it ( and even want it ) . Thus, we blow the real problem of the year 2000 out of proportion . Firstly, we are uncertain what will happen because the Y2K bug is not predictable, in other words, we don't undestand it . It is my observation that the human species tends to react in three different ways when it does not understand something . The first, and most common of these reactions, is hate; the second is acceptance, and the third is fear . Since we are facing a computer bug and not anything organic, we would look silly hating a computer bug . So, that reaction is out of the question . Since this is a fairly widespread problem and we are a paranoid species not prone to acceptance, this option is also no good . So, the only option we have is to fear it . Yet another of humanity's deep-rooted instinctual tendancies that makes us prone to believe in this hoax is our subliminal desire to be afraid . Fear sends the adrenaline pumping through our veins like junkies doped up on heroin and makes us feel invincible .
